This one's the grandest of Kate's Roundominoes series. It has acrylic 83 pieces in six luminous transparent colors plus black and white accents. They include 1 through 5 rounds, 1 through 4 bridges, and 8 new shapes called doopers, that are like double rounds with extra bridges (white pieces above). We named them that because this set was designed at the urgings of a young friend, Cristopher Jarrett, who wanted a "super dooper" version of Roundominoes. The doopers are like little cartoon figures with droll beach-scene names (Kate did design this in Florida). Can you find the bikini top? Halter top? Rubber ducky? Fish? Flying fish? Hairdryer? Beyond a doubt, Tri-Jazz is one of our most exquisite art pieces. The tiles are rhombdominoes—parallelograms the size of two rhombs joined, or the equivalent of four equilateral triangles. Both left and right tilt are included, made up of 3 kinds of triangles: equilateral, isosceles, and right triangle that is the size of the first two combined. The 54 tiles are hand-inlaid with every combination of three colors. Here's a sample tile. Chris Palmer is an artist in many disciplines, including Origami, fabric folding, weavings, Moorish tilings, Flash programming, computer graphics and more. Here we see his love for tessellations, evocative of M.C. Escher's work, where simple grids and polygons, like triangles, squares and hexagons, are transformed into "spools" that gather around vertices in threes, fours and sixes, forming spirals where they meet. Note the three-color tiling where each color pair takes a turn at checkerboarding a region. Can you spot the underlying grid? It looks a little like the diagram at right.
