    CLASSIC WOODEN BOARD GAMES

May 1, 2021—Abstract wooden board games
Greetings, dear friends and fans and customers of gamepuzzles by Kadon Enterprises, Inc. Today we'd like to share with you the joy of playing deep and absorbing abstract games that interest the mind and lighten the hours. Our criteria, that our games should be challenging with friendly competition, not hostile or predatory, show strongly in these classic sets. Check them out. Nine Men's Morris is an exception, but then we didn't invent it and it is millennia old. At least we made it with a very handsome board and a versatile flip side.

Our games will entertain all your family and friends, and we give FREE SHIPPING within the USA until December 31, 2021. See also all of our other unique and original, award-winning gamepuzzles on our website. They make fine gifts for all occasions and provide a lifetime of pleasure.

Here's a brief description of these five games, counterclockwise from top left. For full descriptions, click on their names or links.

    • Proteus—a meta-game with changing rules. The rules are on the 9 tiles: 3 shapes in 3 colors tell how to move, how to trade tiles, and how to win. Rules change when a matching shape of disk enters a tile. A game lover's game, with deep strategy and intricate combinations. For 2 players, ages 12-adult.   Deluxe 16" wood board, $95; softpack, $75
    • Six by Six—A trilogy of game systems and solitaires, a rich and fascinating collection of over 100 themes, with two separate sets of playing pieces and three handbooks, a virtual game room in a tailored carrybag. Handcrafted 14" wood board is laser-engraved. For 1 to 4 players, ages 8-adult.   $149
    • Game of Y—Deep, subtle and beautiful, Y has the simplest rule: place one stone per turn, connect all three sides of the board with a toninuous string of your color. No draws! Defense is exquisitely important. Six other games plus solitaires included. 15" wood board, 80 glass stones, tailored velvet carrybag. Ages 10-adult.   Deluxe wood, $95; softpack, $49
    • Nine Men's Morris/Fox and Geese—A centuries-old game on a handsome, laser-engraved 11½" board. Ancestor of tic-tac-toe; slide pieces to get 3 in a row, remove one opponent piece when you do. Win when opponent has only 2 pieces remaining. On flip side, play Fox and Geese and jumping solitaires. Black and white stones, 18 each; felt slip case. Age 6-adult, 1-2 players.   $65
    • Void—The sculpted 4x4 grid serves for five progressively more complex game concepts and four puzzle themes—enduring play values. Handpainted wood pieces with single or double arrows point, respectively, one or two spaces away to direct playmate's moves or to block spaces. For 1 or 2 players, ages 8-adult.   Deluxe 8" wood board, $55; softpack, $35

    QUINTAPATHS

    May 7, 2021—Quintapaths
Greetings, dear friends, fans, visitors, and customers of gamepuzzles.com—
Here is a closer look at one of the special sets in our Black, White, and Red Collection—Quintapaths, a unique tiling puzzle created by Scott Kim when he was in his teens. The cool design in the 11" tray consists of 20 stick-shaped 1x5 tiles, each differently inlaid with 0 to 5 black squares. This is just one of thousands of different arrangements possible with this ingenious brainchild of Scott. Kadon Enterprises, Inc. has been making Quintapaths since 1997, and it is one of our most highly regarded puzzle sets. Age 10-adult.   $95

    May 9, 2021—Addendum
It's interesting to rearrange the 20 sticks to try to achieve symmetrical designs. The solution shown above has mirror symmetry on the horizontal axis and opposite-color (anti-color) symmetry on the vertical center line. One day it occurred to one of us that we really love the pentomino shapes. With 50 black squares in Quintapaths, could it possibly create a solution with 10 pentominoes? It was a big thrill when our friend Anneke Treep found this one. Even Scott Kim was surprised to see how much is possible with his "playable art".

    INTARSIA

    May 12, 2021—Intarsia
Greetings, dear friends, fans, visitors, and customers of gamepuzzles.com—
Here is a closer look at another one of the special sets in our Black, White, and Red Collection—Intarsia, created by Henrik Morast. Intarsia had its world premiere at the prestigious International Puzzle Party in August 2008 in Prague, the Czech Republic. The 32 reversible trapezoidal tiles carry either a white or a black diamond, paired with a black or white triangle, respectively. Forming them into three-fold symmetries in their 11" tray is elusively difficult, even with billions of possibilities. Intarsia was chosen by Games Magazine for their list of the 100 best games in 2009.

Kadon Enterprises, Inc., has been making Intarsia for nearly a quarter century, and it is still one of our most captivating puzzles. For 1 or 2 players, ages 10-adult.   $95

    May 12, 2021—Addendum
Sue had been playing with her Intarsia set and discovered a new two-fold rotational symmetry solution we haven't seen before. See other cool solutions.

    May 13, 2021—Addendum 2
What a marvelous arrangement—not only rotational symmetry, but opposite-color rotational symmetry. That's one of the rarest configurations to find. I call that a feast for eye and mind. Here's a large collection of patterns we've found—if you find a gorgeous new solution, send us a photo and we'll add it into that showcase. What makes it extra challenging to form such symmetries with Intarsia is that there are 32 trapezoidal tiles, and 32 is not divisible by three or 6, while the tray is a perfect hexagon. Oh, my.

    • End Point—A gameboard like no other... the grid is a swirl of arches, a network of intersections. Handcrafted, laser-engraved 24" wood gameboard. Dark and light wood pieces have felt on one side. Three intriguing games of positional and movement strategy use a unique element: a piece flips on every move from slider to jumper and back again. See our YouTube video for how to play. For 2 players, ages 10-adult.   $95
    • More or Less—Another brilliant innovation of strategy. Handcrafted 17" wood board is laser-engraved with an intricate decagonal matrix of intersections. 25 wood pieces have felt on one side. Each player "owns" a different side. Having "more" is not the only goal. Win by having more than 18 or less than 7 of your color on top. One or two players, ages 10 to adult.   $65
    • Over-Pass—This intricate lattice is a multipurpose game grid of spaces, lines, and vertices for movement strategy. Handcrafted 17" wood board is laser-engraved. The pieces are jewel-like disks in four colors. Two wood dice determine how many actions you take on a turn: trade pieces on parallel lines, overpass a series of pieces on connected vertices, slide along a line, or exit a piece from an outermost corner. First player to exit all 10 pieces wins. For ages 10 to adult, 1 to 4 players.   $65
    • Ternion Factor—Art's newest game, drawing on new themes and classic abstract strategies on a graceful, intricate board design. Handcrafted, laser-engraved 17" wood board. Dedicated gamers will appreciate the beautiful logic and complex interactions. Yet the goal is simple: just get all your pieces onto the board. For 1 to 4 players, ages 12 to adult.   $85
    • The Power of Two—A totally unique concept, play method, and board design. Handcrafted, laser-engraved 17" wood board. Dark and light wood pieces have felt on one side. The goal is to bring all 16 of your pieces onto the board. When two pieces on the board meet on adjacent intersections, a new piece enters on the third vertex of their triangle. See the full YouTube video for how to play. For 1 or 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $65

    LA ORA STELO/FENCES

May 12, 2021—La Ora Stelo fences
Kadon Enterprises, Inc., is proud to present La Ora Stelo and the new supplemental Fences created by Jacques Ferroul. Here's a brief description. See full details in our website showcase. We provide FREE SHIPPING in the USA throughout 2021.

LA ORA STELO—The tiles of La Ora Stelo are an original polyform set, the polyores, based on the two golden triangles. The "wide" isosceles triangle, with angles of 36-108-36; The "tall" isosceles triangle, with angles of 72-36-72. The base of the wide triangle matches the sides of the tall, and the base of the tall matches the sides of the wide. The 32 Lucite tiles are in 8 luminous translucent colors. The 12" tray's floor has 9 rings for forming ascending sizes of pentagons, rhombs, trapezoids, stars and more. Display stand included. For ages 10 to adult. $72

FENCE KITS—New in 2020: three kits of fence segments, total 142 pieces, to build borders for special figures—they are an art in their own right. Here is a brief description of the fences. For more in-depth details, see this colorful report.

    • Kit 1—To coordinate with the sizes of La Ora Stelo tiles, the square has unit 1 length; the rectangle has length phi, the golden ratio (an infinite decimal that starts like this: phi = 1.618033988749894848...). The third shape is a slender 36-degree "kite". The three shapes match by height when they interlock. $20
    • Kit 2—The 252-degree angle piece can be combined with the phi-1 (phi minus 1) width mini-rectangle in 4 ways and assembled into larger fences. $9
    • Kit 3— contains 10 of the 216-degree chevrons, 10 of the 288-degree inner kites, 10 of the 288-degree phi~1 and 10 of the 288-degree 1~phi angles (we call these bookends); each has a jigsaw-style interlock. The ~ linking two digits indicates the respective lengths of two sides. Combined with Kit 1 and Kit 2 fences, every combination of angles can be explored. $16
Treat your puzzling to double the excitement with this new art form!

    May 26, 2021—Hopscotch
Greetings, puzzle lovers! Our exciting feature for today's showcase is Hopscotch, created by our own long-time associate and dear friend, Thomas Atkinson. The inspiration for Hopscotch came from the arrangement of tiles on Thomas's ceiling, where alternate rows of squares are moved over by half a space. Every combination of one to four connected squares makes the delightful family of 24 puzzle pieces we call polyhops. They let you solve an awesome range of beautiful figures. We make Hopscotch in marble-grained acrylic in four color mixes, with display stand. Addictive fun for 1 and 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $72

    ROMBIX JR.

    May 28, 2021—Rombix Jr.
Greetings, puzzle lovers!— Another puzzle celebrating its 25th anniversary is Rombix Jr., inspired by Alan Schoen's Rombix. This delightful little set of lasercut acrylic has just four shapes, each in four colors: a single rhomb, a square, a chevron (pair of rhombs), and a "boot" (paired rhomb and square). These four pieces also form a small octagon in a mathematically interesting way and countless other mosaic designs—true playable art, beloved by young and old. The variety of pretty designs that Rombix Jr. can make is astonishing—the pieces are a natural for creating kaleidoscopic symmetries. It is also an introduction to the fascinating mathematics of "rhombic circle tilings", turning math into art. Rombix Jr. has a 5.5" tray and includes an illustrated booklet containing many activities suitable for 1 and 2 players, ages 5 to adult.   $32

    OCTILES

    May 28, 2021—Octiles
Greetings, dear friends, fans, visitors, and customers of gamepuzzles.com—
Octiles, created by Dale Walton and published by Kadon since 1984, is one of our most acclaimed sets, repeatedly one of Games Magazine's 100 best games. We frequently hear raves about it from satisfied customers. The 18 all-different octagonal wood tiles have four paths each. Players join the tiles to create paths across the board as their five "runners" race to the opposite side. Tiles move and paths change on every turn, creating a dynamic whirl of strategies. Octiles' handcrafted wood board and tiles are laser-engraved and store in a handsome fabric satchel, good for travel, too. The book includes three game variations plus 29 puzzles. For 1 to 4 players, ages 10 to adult.   $145

    OCHOMINOES

    May 28, 2021—Ochominoes
Ochominoes was created by Dan Klarskov of Denmark, a jazz musician and schoolteacher, and a longtime friend of Kate Jones. Together, Dan and Kate collaborated on the development of this amazing set. The 24 tiles are paired octagons (octagon dominoes) with 0 to 6 squares attached on their edges—a new polyform set we’ve named polyocts. Many look like goofy little cartoon characters. They are color-coded for the number of squares they carry. The solution shown is a rare arrangement where no two of the same color touch. There are a dizzying number of different awesome figures and patterns to build with some or all of the tiles, and splendid symmetries in and out of the 8.5" tray. The booklet has rules for 2 games and is chockful of fun and creative themes solved by Dan through months of determined exploration. For 1 to 4 players, ages 8 to adult.   $65

No draws! Defense is exquisitely important. Rules for six other games are included, plus several jumping solitaires. The elegantly handcrafted, laser-engraved 15" Baltic birch gameboard, with 80 glass go stones, stores in a velvet carrybag, nice for travel, too. For 1 and 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $95

Created in 1986 for an annual puzzle party, this ingenious double puzzle languished in our archives for 25 years. We were pleased finally to publish it on its 25th birthday. Five 4" reversible blocks of wood—handfinished, handpainted—carry two sets of laser-engraved images: partial pentominoes on one side, tangled ropes on the other. TWENTY-TANS

    June 3, 2021—Twenty-Tans
In the beginning were Tangrams, a set of 7 tiles based on triangles derived from squares cut in half diagonally. They date back to the 17th century. Here is their latest brilliant and colorful embodiment created by our distinguished associate, Hans Weidig IV—a teacher in real life and the game master at our Maryland Renaissance pavilion, Ye Olde Gamery. True to their mathematical purity, the 20 tiles contain 5 each (a "hand") of four colors, covering a total of 16 squares. Form hundreds of figures large and small. A rare solution is shown at left: the "stretched hexagon" with colors fully separated. The graceful oval tray displays your creative designs as an ever-changing work of art. For ages 6 to adult,   $49

    TRIANGOES, TRIANGOES JR.

    June 3, 2021—Triangoes
Today we're showcasing a modern descendant of the historical tangram puzzle. Triangoes is based on an inspiration of Manuel Garcia, a longtime Kadon friend and inveterate inventor and cartoonist. (Here are some samples of his humor and inventiveness.)

Triangoes is one of our larger creations. Over 6 years in development! Squares, parallelograms, and triangles in every combination of 5 colors form 80 unique, hand-inlaid acrylic tiles. The booklet provides hundreds of progressively more intricate puzzles plus rules for 15 games—yes, fifteen! The two-sided vinyl gameboard is a 13x36" art banner with rod and cord ready to hang on the wall as a colorful accent for any room. For 1 to 10 players, ages 8 to adult. Please allow 2 weeks for shipping, as this masterpiece is made to order.   $225

Triangoes Jr. is a 15-piece, two-color subset of Triangoes and has continued to delight us with its variety of shapes and color symmetries, even years after we originally explored it. The hand-inlaid, all-acrylic set has its own 8.5" tray with two corner triangles that double as wildcards. Its color mix may vary. For 1 or 2 players, ages 8 to adult.   $65

This ingenious puzzle, that can form the most beautiful and varied designs, was presented by Jerry Farrell originally to the International Puzzle Party in Prague in 2008, under the name "Prague Six." The challenge was simply to combine the 8 right isosceles triangles and 8 "sheds" to form 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 squares in or out of the 7" tray, with a unique rule: each square had to be "traceable". All four sides of a square had to be exposed, either on the outside or the inside, or a combination of the two. No two squares could have tiles stuck together by a joined side. An empty square ("negative space") also counts! Can you count the 14 squares hiding in the solution at lower left? Can you build more? The world record is 26. Find more and win a prize. Two friendly games are also included. Recommended for ages 8 to adult, 1 or 2 players.   $42

    TINY TANS | TRIO-IN-A-TRAY

    June 7, 2021—Tiny Tans, Trio-in-a-Tray

Tiny Tans — These mini-puzzles have just 4 pieces each, based on combinations of right triangles, like their cousin, the classic tangrams. Dozens of silhouette patterns pose various levels of difficulty for each of the three styles. The "Tantalizing T" puzzle may look familiar, but we've changed its traditional proportions to make it more versatile. "U Can Do It" has 4 all-different tiles. The T and U are 5 squares in size (pentominoes). "Square and Fair" looks like a diamond but is really a 2x2 square (tetromino). All pieces are size-compatible for mix-and-match explorations. For ages 8 to adult. Sold as trios or singly.
Colorful acrylic, group of 3, $27 ($10 singly)
Solid wood, group of 3, $42 ($15 singly)

Trio-in-a-Tray — For Tiny Tans' 25th anniversary in 2014, we introduced a special Trio-in-a-Tray that combines all three individual Tiny Tans as one large octagon in a 7" framed tray. Over 230,000 solutions! Each color belongs to a different 4-piece puzzle, so you can easily select them for their individual challenges. Trio-in-a-Tray includes all three of their pattern cards, plus an extra one for combined figures.   $42

Those two solutions shown above for Trio-in-a-Tray have something special going on—did you notice? The one on the right has each color as a single region, with opposite-color rotational symmetry around a symmetrical center. The left solution has no two pieces of the same shape nor the same color sharing sides. Only 8 solutions were ever found to meet this goal. For more details and to order them, click on their name.

    STARHEX-I | STARHEX-II

June 7, 2021—StarHex-I, StarHex-II .... These dynamic puzzles build on a grid of hexagons surrounded by triangles. The many symmetrical figures and themes are surprisingly difficult and very satisfying when found. Laser-cut translucent acrylic gives these puzzles a stained-glass look. A pamphlet with challenges that combine the two sets is included when purchased together.

StarHex-I, created by Theo Geerinck, has all the different ways of joining 0 to 6 triangles to the edges of a hexagon. The 14 tiles are color-coded by the number of triangles attached; 0 and 6 share one color, and 1 and 5 share one color. The 6" round tray with stellated border is its most compact symmetrical shape. Booklet includes activities for 1 and 2 players, ages 8 to adult.   $35

StarHex-II, created by Jacob Lettie, has all the different ways of joining not more than four parts: one, two or three hexagons with one, two or three triangles attached. The 17 pieces are color-coded by type. The oval 6x7.5" tray with inverted borders is its most compact symmetrical shape. Booklet includes activities for 1-2 players, ages 10-adult.   $39

    PENTAROSE

    June 10, 2021—Pentarose
Dear visitors, you may know us as the creators of "playable art"—and Pentarose is surely one of our most gorgeous art puzzles, in its hundreds of designs. Transformed pentagons and sections of stars are the very shapes that fit together on the infinite plane without leaving holes, yet without repeating an exact pattern (thanks to their "golden ratio" properties). We've styled it with four luminous acrylic colors in an 11" circular tray, with a display stand included. Recommended for ages 12 to adult.   $72

Pentarose has an amazing story. It's based on a research project into non-periodic tilings by Sir Roger Penrose, the world-famous astrophysicist, co-author with Stephen Hawking, and co-winner of the Nobel Prize in 2021 for his work on black holes. We were asked to turn one set of his tiles into a puzzle, and Pentarose (the name playfully captures a five-fold rose + Penrose) is the result. Read about Sir Roger's amazing life in Wikipedia.

    TRANSPOSE

    June 10, 2021—Transpose ....
Today we celebrate the silver anniversary of one of our most beautifully styled and versatile board games: Transpose, created and crafted by our friend Christopher Clark, a former Englishman and now a Californian. The board has feet and racing stripes on the bottom and a mirror-smooth finish overall. The 24 handcrafted wood checkers also have a distinctive wood grain stripe across the top. This is craftsmanship of the highest order, made by a woodworker with a passion for perfection and long-lasting excellence. It was named by Games Magazine as the No. 1 strategy game of 1996. The 10x10 grid serves for many excellent games. In "Transpose," be the first to exit 8 checkers off the board, but watch out... some opposing pieces may switch places with yours! Includes seven other good games plus solitaires. For 1 and 2 players, ages 10 to adult. We make the set in two beautiful styles, each 15.5x18" with fabric carrybags:

Traditional style: Christopher's finely crafted wood board, wood checkers, two wood dice.   $175
Contemporary style: Black-on-gray inlaid acrylic board, red and blue accents, inlaid acrylic checkers. The board can be mounted on the wall as art.   $125

    COLORMAZE/FLYING COLORS

    June 11, 2021—Colormaze/Flying Colors ....
Today we show one of our earliest and well-loved family games, invented by Dwayne Mears as a thesis when he was still a college student. We developed it further to include even more activities for using the attractive game equipment.

Colormaze (above left) is playable as two games of strategy, plus two categories of solitaire puzzles. In Colormaze, form a 6-color pattern with tiles on the board to match the secret pattern on your card, while strategy options may let you reposition tiles, even those placed by other players. In Alphamaze, gain points by getting 5 different colors in a row or by blocking opponents' colors.

Flying Colors (above right) is a huge collection of original games by Stephen Sniderman that spliced neatly onto the Colormaze set and earned it a place on Games Magazine's list of the 100 best games of 2002. With 12 additional tiles and a bag of black and white stones, the Colormaze set's possibilities expanded to over 1000 new games! The 40-page book of variations, especially for games that never have a tie, also added many intriguing solitaire puzzles using the 36 tiles, 6 each in 6 colors, a rainbow-like visual treat.

The handcrafted deluxe wood board, laser-engraved and with handpainted trim, was introduced for Colormaze's 25th Anniversary, 1984-2009—a worthy embodiment to celebrate this good game's staying power. In velvet satchel, including the Flying Colors companion.   $95

    BRACE/MÜHLE

    June 14, 2021—Brace/Mühle ....
Did you know we've been creators of beautiful, award-winning gamepuzzles since 1979? This year we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Brace, named by Games Magazine as one of the 100 best games of the year 1998. Brace's striking board design has 3 path colors that determine how pieces may move. Goal: move pieces to "brace," or embrace, an opponent piece between two of yours to gain points; reach 3 points on large scoring cube to win. Rules for four other games and some solitaires are included.

    • The large (24") tapestry gameboard can hang as a banner or roll for storage in long corduroy sleeve. The 18 layered acrylic disks, six each in three colors to match the board, reverse to 9 black and 9 white. On Brace's reverse side, by popular demand, we offer Nine Men's Morris, also known as Mühle... one of history's oldest games. The goal: get 3 of your pieces in a row to remove one opponent piece from the board. (It's the ancestor of TicTacToe!) Player with fewer than 3 pieces remaining loses. For 1 and 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $68

    • The large (24") handcrafted wood gameboard and 18 matching wood disks are laser-engraved and handpainted. A separate printed grid lets you play Nine Men's Morris. Felt slipcase serves for storage and as table pad. For 1 and 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $115

    THROW A FIT

    June 18, 2021—Throw a Fit ....
Greetings, game and puzzle lovers. This time we're throwing a fit. Throw a Fit, invented by Jeff Dender, has ten different 3-color dice with all the combinations of how three colors can be apportioned to cover a cube. They sort into 1-1-4 and 2-2-2 and 1-2-3 divisions. A point-scoring game gives each player 5 rolls to gain the most cubes of the same color on top. Another game is similar to poker.

We've added tricky color puzzles, including a series in 3-D. One such challenge is to build a 2x2x2 cube with any 8 of the dice so as to model the color pattern of any of the 10 individual cubes. There is a small affinity to Rubik's torment here.

The cubes make a good travel game for all ages, easy to pack in drawstring pouch. For any number of players, ages 9 to adult.   $25

    MANOOVER / MANOOVER PLUS

    June 22, 2021—Manoover / Manoover Plus ....
Greetings, game lovers. Today we bring you two sizes of the Manoover game, both honored on Games Magazine's list of the year's 100 best games, 2008 and 2012.

Manoover — This brilliantly original game of strategy was created by Don O'Brien. The rules are simple: Roll 3 dice, make a maneuvering adjustment to any of your pieces whose number matches the dice, then move your 6 pieces in numerical order one step in the direction their arrows point. Your goal: to enter your pieces into your goal space and, if possible, to push opponent pieces into your goal as well. The handcrafted, 11.5" wood board is laser-engraved and handpainted. The 3 wooden dice really roll. The 6 engraved, handpainted wood disks per player are numbered 1-6. Average playing time: 20 to 30 minutes. For 1 or 2 players, ages 10 to adult.   $49

Manoover Plus — This expanded version of Manoover allows for three-player games on one side of the beautifully handcrafted, handfinished 17" wood board. Laser-engraved on both sides, with handpainted accents. The order-5 grid accommodates 8 pieces each, numbered 1 through 8, for the two-player game and uses 4 octahedral dice that let you roll up to the number 8. For 2 or 3 players, ages 10 to adult. We make Manoover Plus by special order.   $95

Greetings, puzzle lovers. Over 2.3 million solutions, yet only very few with checkerboarding! We intended it as a gentle tribute to M.C. Escher's genius in geometric transformations.
