This acrylic set, inspired by Alan Schoen's Rombix, has just four shapes, each in four colors: a single rhomb, a square, a chevron (pair of rhombs), and a "boot" (paired rhomb and square). These four pieces also form a small octagon in a mathematically interesting way. The variety of pretty patterns they can make is astonishing--they are a natural for creating kaleidoscopic symmetries. Here is the puzzle set that seems to inspire love at first sight for all ages, in all places. The 24 little hexagon tiles (sample at right) are inlaid with diamonds in all combinations of four colors. Match them by color to solve patterns, create designs, and play several games. The basic figure fits into a 7½" rounded triangular acrylic tray. For 1 to 4 players, ages 8 to adult. $49

The hefty booklet includes over 200 puzzles (some of these are the most difficult we've ever dreamed up) and rules for six competitive games. The scalloped-edge black tray is 8½", with pieces in jewel-like colors. A separate game grid is included, useful for both the games and the puzzles. Playable by 1 to 6 players, ages 12 to adult. $55
