Answers to  A Rooky Puzzle

This puzzle had 3 parts:

  1. Opening moves:

There are 12 possible first moves. They are shown here with the first number jumping over the second. Please refer to the diagram on page 23 for positions of the eight numbers. Number 6 has no first move. The others form six pairs of symmetrical equivalents. Every opening move can be solved, usually more than one way.

    1/2 and 8/5
    2/1 and 5/8
    3/1 and 7/8
    3/6 and 7/6
    4/2 and 4/5
    4/3 and 4/7

  2. Fewest jumpers:

All but the 2/1 and 5/8 pair of opening moves can be solved with only 4 pieces jumping. The exception can be solved in 5 sets of jumps.

  3. Most pieces jumped:

The 1/2 and 8/5 opening moves have their last jumper go over 4 pieces. Here is the full sequence:

    1/2
    6/3
    4/5
    7/8-4-1-6
